Jenny speaking.

Spoke with Holly (South Peninsula Hospital, Homer) about our schedule.   She suggested we visit Exit Glacier when we are in Seward.  It's a nice little hike and doesn't cost a nickel.  She is sending us an email this weekend with other suggestions. It is great having a contact up there for us.  She even said that a coworker might be available to take Kurt out fishing while I'm at work.  Holly is a very nice person.

Jenny speaking....

We've made a lot of decisions on lodging and activities.  These may change later, but this is our plan:

Sunday, August 19th, move Laura into Chautauqua dorm at Texas State in San Marcos. Drive back to Flower Mound that night.

Monday, August 20th, 3:30 P.M., fly to Anchorage .  Arrive at 7PM, check into Marriott.

Tuesday, August 21st, Drive to Homer, reservations at The Driftwood Inn for three nights.

Wednesday, August 22nd, free until 8PM, then work at South Peninsula Hospital

Thursday, August 23rd, work at hospital.

Friday, August 24th, hopefully no work.  Reservations at Seaside Farms outside Homer for two nights.  Later discovered that the owner, Mossy is Jewel's (the pop singer from the 80's) aunt.  Also, two of her brothers star in a Discovery Channel series called "Alaska, the Last Frontier".

Saturday, August 25th.   Halibut Fishing, made reservations at DeepStrike Charters.  This boat holds 6 fishermen.  They go a long way out where the big ones are; these fish can be 300 pounds!

Sunday, August 26th.  Leisurely drive to Seward, possibly stopping at Exit Glacier on the way into town.  Reservations at the Holiday Inn Express in Seward, on my points.  Also, I forgot to mention, airfare and car rental all paid for on airline miles.

Monday, August 27th.  Silver Salmon fishing, four hours on Resurrection Bay on a boat with four other fishermen (woman).  The boat is the C-Hawk, with Aurora Charters in Seward.  Spend the afternoon exploring Seward, then drive to Anchorage.  Reservations at Embassy Suites; booked on points!

Tuesday, August 28th.  Drive to Denali National Park.  Reservations at Denali Morning Mountain Hostel.  We plan on two nights in a platform tent, and two nights in one of their cabins.

Wed, August 29-Fri, August 31st. Denali National Park

Saturday, September 1st.  Back to Anchorage, reservations at Embassy Suites (again, on points).

Sunday, September 2nd.  Fly back to DFW, leaving at 8:30 PM, arriving at 5:30 AM on Labor Day.  Time to catch some sleep and say "That was a trip of a lifetime!"

Ok, we have our schedule about worked out...

We leave on Monday afternoon, taking a nonstop flight to Anchorage.  Jenny has upgrades that we hope will put us in the front of the plane.  We arrive in Anchorage about 7pm.  We will check into our hotel,

very nice Marriott property (sorry Lex), then we're off to dinner.  Tonight we will be dining here:

Jenny has been to that restaurant on previous business trips.

The hotel has a free breakfast.  Free is my favorite price. After enjoying our FREE breakfast, Jenny may have to make a quick appearance at the hospital in Anchorage, then we're off to Homer.  Homer is at least a 4.5 hour drive, and the scenery is supposed to be spectacular.

For the next three nights we'll be staying at The Driftwood Inn.  Jenny has to work on Wed., Thurs., and Fri., so I will have to struggle along to find something to do on my own.  Somehow I don't think I'll be bored.  Home is famous for 'The Spit', a 5 mile strip of sand that extends out into the bay.  The strip is loaded with touristy things for people who visit on cruise ships.  It also is the home of 'The Fishing Hole'.

The fishing hole is a man made cove where salmon are released every year by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.   They go out into the ocean for 5-7 years, get really big, then return to the cove to spawn.  Tide goes in, fish swim into the cove.  Tide goes out, and the poor guys are trapped.  During the King Salmon run, people stand shoulder to shoulder trying to catch these fish using lures or cured salmon eggs as bait.  When we are there, the Silver Salmon will be running, and I'm thinking that there will be a lot less fishing pressure.  These salmon are 9-14 pounds and very tasty.

On Friday, we have to move out of The Driftwood and begin paying for our own lodging.  Friday and Saturday nights we'll be at this unusual Inn

The lady who owns this place is Jewel's (the pop singer) aunt.  She's a bit of a celebrity in Homer.  Here she is singing a song that she wrote and performed decades ago:

I sense that she's an aging hippy, probably in her early 60's.  The accommodations seemed funky, and the room was cheap, so we decided to go for it.

On Sat. we plan on going Halibut fishing, if we can afford it.  This is a major expense, so we'll have to see how it goes.  Homer is known as the Halibut fishing capital of the world, and they pull in many over 300 pounds every year.  Homer is also known as a drinking town with a fishing problem.

More soon.

On June 2nd, the evening of my youngest daughter's graduation party, Jenny surprised me by revealing that she'd arranged a two week trip to Alaska at the end of January.  She did this by sitting me down in the middle of a group of about 60 friends and relatives, and presenting me with travel documents and a couple of Alaska tourist books.  I immediately discovered that, although I love surprises, I'm not that crazy about surprises presented in big groups of people.

Anyway...we're off to Alaska!  I can't be more excited. We look forward to silver salmon and halibut fishing, a wildlife cruse in Seward, and long hikes in Denali National Park.

We're able to do this trip very frugally.  Jenny has a few days work in Homer, so many of the expenses the first week of the trip will be on her company's dime.  My flight, the rental car, and several hotel stays will be on Jennifer's American Airline miles.  It's about time we got a small reward for being apart!   We all make sacrifices when Jenny travels, but Jenny makes the biggest.
